From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An encyclopedia (also spelled encyclopaedia or encyclopædia) is a comprehensive written compendium holding information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. Encyclopedias are divided into articles with one article on each subject covered. The articles on subjects in an encyclopedia are usually accessed alphabetically by article name and can be contained in one volume or many volumes, depending on the amount of material included. Indeed, the purpose of an encyclopedia is to collect knowledge disseminated around the globe; to set forth its general system to the men with whom we live, and transmit it to those who will come after us, so that the work of preceding centuries will not become useless to the centuries to come; and so that our offspring, becoming better instructed, will at the same time become more virtuous and happy, and that we should not die without having rendered a service to the human race in the future years to come. — Diderot OverviewFrom Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How is information in an encyclopedia organized? Q. How is information in an encyclopedia organized? Is it by time? Or in alphabetical order by topic? Or something else? Asked by boltai - Fri Jan 16 03:00:17 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A regular encyclopedia is organized alphabetically Answered by Anna - Fri Jan 16 03:03:30 2009 When citing an encyclopedia, do I need to mention the exact page? Q. I know that quotes from general books do require the page to be mentioned, but is the same necessary for a dictionary or encyclopedia? Or is it implied that the specific information would obviously be found under the discussed word? I am reffering to an academic essay in which I discuss the meaning, etymology, usage etc of certain terms and use dictionaries for reference. Q. I'm looking for informative, non-fiction, encyclopedia-type books on gemstones and aromatherapy: their backgrounds, origins, healing powers etc. I'm not a very spiritual person so I'd prefer something a little more scientific (as in, "rocks and gems are made up of ions and so are our bodies" type thing) This is a new intrest of mine so any suggestions and reviews would be appreciated. Thank you! Asked by red - Fri Aug 29 02:42:34 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. For the books on gemstones, I think your best bet is to go to a bookshop or look on amazon.co.uk or amazon.com and choose a book which appeals to you. All my best ones are Danish, written by Jette Holm. You may find translations in English. I do not recommend at all the books by Katrina Raphaell which are tough to read and contain no illustrations. For aromatherapy I will without hesitation recommend: "Nerys Purchon's Handbook of Aromatherapy" by Nerys Purchon You also have a very useful small book containing lots of colour-coded information. It is: Aromatherapy - Essential Oils in colour by Rosemary Caddy All the best!
